What does “light” mean to me?

During week four you might have seen me discussing my favourite type of lighting with you - backlighting. My first thoughts were to take another backlit photo, but I felt I’d just be repeating myself. There is SO much you can do with light it would be a shame to not experiment. I started to think back to an episode of America’s Next Top Model (cycle 14) I watched, where the photographer put a piece of patterned fabric between the model and the light source. This technique works like a stencil and leaves a dynamic motif on the model’s features. Using this as inspiration, I placed lace between myself and the light source to create a pattern across myself. It was quite tricky doing it by myself as I had to work the camera as well as making sure I was framing myself correctly and placing the lace in the correct position to create the design.

Tomorrow I will share the last of my images from the photo challenge. Have a lovely day!

Temptation - #KatieJadePhotoChallenge

All this week I will be sharing the images I took as part of the #KatieJadePhotoChallenge. Today it is all about temptation.

The photographs I took for the #KatieJadePhotoChallenge will be available for you to buy (£1.00 for a postcard sized print or £6.00 for a 8”x10” print + P&P). Please contact me by email (katie@katiejade.co.uk) with the title of the print, the size and quantity to make your order.

What does “Temptation” mean to me?

I’ve always loved fairytales and recently I have become ridiculously obsessed with the TV series Once Upon A Time. The series has reignited my love for Snow White and her story. For my photograph I wanted to focus on the importance of the apple. Will she, won’t she give in to the tempting, delicious apple that the Evil Queen gives her.  I love the bit in the Disney film when the poison drips from the apple forming an image of a skull before it turns bright, blood red to conceal the evil within. The Queen claims it is a wishing apple, knowing Snow’s love for the Prince, tempts her to make a wish to be with Charming before taking a bite. I’m also a sucker for a love story, so when the Prince wakes her from the sleeping curse by true love’s first kiss makes me go all silly and giggly!

As a child I used to carry around little toys of the seven dwarves. I found it difficult to part with them, even to the point when we had a family photo shoot where I refused to let go of them so they were in the photographs too! My favourite dwarf is grumpy, what is yours?

I hope you like my “Temptation” photo! Tomorrow I will share my “Light” photograph with you..

Character - #KatieJadePhotoChallenge

All this week I will be sharing the images I took as part of the#KatieJadePhotoChallenge. Today I will share my character with you.

What does “Character” mean to me?

Yesterday in my blog I mentioned my Book Of Dreams and how rediscovering it was the start of the photo challenge. One of the characters I created in my book was based on a creature that came to me during a nightmare. A clown. I am terrified of clowns, and the photo I took still sends shivers down my spine. The clown carried a weapon, unbound and psychotic. But now, five years on, this character has developed. She is more manipulative and can lure in her prey with her charm. By welcoming unaware visitors into the carnival, she traps and torments the innocents before devouring them whole. If you dare to look close enough, you can still see the blood of her victims on her hands and mouth.

I love dressing up and becoming a different character for my self portrait sessions. When I did my hair and make-up for this photo shoot, I could feel my body language change as I transformed into this sinister creature. It was horrible to look in the mirror and see a clown staring back at me, but I used this fear to really exaggerate the darkness within the character. When I look at this image I don’t see me at all. I see the creature from my nightmares.

I hope you liked my character picture! Tomorrow I will share my temptation image with you.
